The Fish and Wildlife Service today formally designated 298,845 acres as critical habitat for the westernpopulation of the yellow-billed cuckoo, dialing back what had been proposed during the Trump administration.Citing the existence of conservation management plans, the federal agency significantly cut the previous criticalhabitat proposal by 39%."The Service did not include all habitats where the species breeds, feeds, migrates, and stops over as criticalhabitat," FWS noted. "Our designation of critical habitat focuses on selected areas used for breeding."
