The Plastic Bank, a business that allows people to turn in plastic bottles for credit in a bank account, announced today that it has collected 1 billion bottles. The "social enterprise," as the Plastic Bank describes itself, operates 320 banks in countries like Haiti, the Philippines and Indonesia, and supports more than 17,000 individual collectors. The bottles equal more than 20 million kilograms of plastic waste diverted from landfills, waterways or burn pits, the company said.
