In a move with potentially far-reaching consequences for both the oil and gas industry and the Biden administration's climate agenda, environmental advocacy groups are pushing EPA to scrap a long-standing policy that waives regulation of methane and ethane as smog-forming pollutants. In a petition submitted today, the Center for Biological Diversity, joined by hundreds of other organizations, asked the agency to reverse a 1970s-era decision that exempts the two hydrocarbons from treatment as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), saying that "massive" emissions "contribute appreciably to local and regional ozone levels."
