An environmental group is calling for nuclear regulators to do a more thorough review of procedures at the now-closed San Onofre Nuclear Plant. Friends of the Earth filed a petition in 2012 asking for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine procedures that led to the installation of faulty steam generators at the nuclear plant. Damon Moglen of Friends of the Earth said at the time that Southern California Edison, which owned the plant, should have applied for a license amendment. Instead, the owner told NRC that the new generators were essentially the same as the ones they replaced. Three years after his petition was filed, NRC this week released a draft decision saying it does not have to do a more thorough review because the plant is now closed.
