San Diego decisively moved yesterday to slash its greenhouse gas emissions and transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. The unanimous City Council vote marks the first legally binding pledge made by a major U.S. city to commit to renewable energy. Though much of the plan remains to be written, the city said it would move to recycle methane from its sewage and water plants and would likely take control of the local utility. The Democratic-controlled City Council presented a unified front with the city's Republican mayor on the issue. "It's not a partisan issue at all," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said. "It's about putting a marker down. It's the right thing to do."
