Polar bears are covering more ground than ever as hunting grounds drift farther and faster away from home, according to new research. Polar bears usually hunt seals on drifting sea ice before returning to distinct territories on land, but with a warming Arctic climate, ice is becoming thinner and, therefore, drifts faster. "In order for an Alaskan polar bear to remain an Alaskan polar bear, it must walk further or faster to the east on the 'treadmill,' or it will end up in Russia," U.S. Geological Survey wildlife biologist David Douglas said yesterday at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting.
