Miners in Peru sift through dirt beneath the Madre de Dios River in search of gold but release mercury in the process, scientists say. "Somebody will dive down to the bottom of the river with a scuba suit or some kind of tube to breathe," said Bill Pan, an assistant professor in the Global Health Institute at Duke University, whose research tracked the spread of mercury from mining areas. "They'll be on the bottom sucking up the dirt."
