Studies of bones found at a coastal site in Alaska show that as sea levels rise, so do levels of mercury in the food chain - which could have alarming implications for the future as climate change threatens to raise the oceans again. The bones found at the Katmai National Park and Preserve date from the early and mid- Holocene periods, when a warming climate melted glaciers and boosted sea levels. Those seas covered the Bering Land Bridge and other areas and released naturally occuring mercury that dispersed in the newly expanded waters.
