The world's first deep-sea mining machines have been built and will help Nautilus Minerals Inc. mine the Pacific Ocean for gold and copper. The three machines cost $500 million and will let the Canadian mining company pursue its plan to gather ore from about a mile beneath Papua New Guinea's Bismarck Sea starting in 2018 (Greenwire, Dec. 12, 2012). "The [mineral] grades you get on the seafloor are much higher than on land," said Nautilus CEO Mike Johnston. "You are able to produce the material at competitive prices with the machines we have here" (Chris Tighe, Financial Times, Nov. 11).
