Fracking uses about 48 billion gallons of water annually, but it represents less than 1 percent of total industrial water use in the United States, according to a study published yesterday. "While the hydraulic fracturing revolution has increased water use and wastewater production in the United States, its water use and produced water intensity is lower than other energy extraction methods and represents only a fraction of total industrial water use nationwide," reads the study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters.
