A key part of the Hetch Hetchy water system is at risk of "catastrophic collapse" and could need hundreds of millions of dollars in repairs, according to San Francisco regulators. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission said the Mountain Tunnel, which supplies water from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir to 2.6 million homes and businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area, will need at least $100 million in repairs or a full replacement at a cost of $630 million. The utility commission has known for 25 years that significant rebuilding work would be needed on the 19-mile tunnel, which was built in 1925, but focused its budget for capital improvements on other infrastructure. The tunnel is difficult to access because it travels through a rugged wilderness area near Yosemite National Park.
