The Fish and Wildlife Service today announced it won't consider listing a Texas spider under the Endangered Species Act. The agency determined the Warton's cave meshweaver (Cicurina wartoni) is not a distinct species, so it can't be listed, according to a notice in today's Federal Register. Based on scientific analysis from both outside sources and the agency, the arachnid should be reclassified as being the same as two other spider species, C. travisae and C. reddelli. The meshweaver first landed on the agency's candidate list back in 1994. In 2004, the Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the agency to have the species listed. The agency eventually ruled that protections for the spider were warranted but such actions were precluded by other higher-priority actions.
