Southern Californians spend millions of dollars annually to avoid litter-ridden beaches, according to a new economic study funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The study, led by Industrial Economics Inc., analyzed the beachgoing habits of Orange County, Calif., residents in July and August 2013. Researchers collected data at 31 beaches along the California coast, ranging from amenities such as bathrooms to how often the beach was cleaned and what kind of debris washed up on its shores.
