A former poacher in the Republic of the Congo is now helping lead a conservation effort to save the nation's elephant population. Brice Mouapele said he worked for years as a poacher inside Odzala-Kokoua National Park before recently joining a task force charged with protecting the park's 9,600 endangered forest elephants. The diminutive 39-year-old said he's the country's first pygmy to become an "ecoguard." "When I used to go into the forest with my father, he would first injure the elephant and then he would send me to finish the job," Mouapele said. "But since being integrated as an eco-guard, I consider the elephants like my children."
