A teenage Indian rhino in New York will be hard up finding the father of her new calf -- he died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 2004. Jimmy's sperm was frozen and later shipped to the Buffalo Zoo, where it was used to artificially inseminate 17-year-old Tashi, who successfully gave birth to a 144-pound female calf. Tashi previously gave birth twice through natural breeding in 2004 and 2008, but her mate died and the zoo's new male Indian rhino is too young to be fertile. Buffalo Zoo officials called the birth a victory for endangered species. They said there are only 59 Indian rhinos in captivity in North America and an estimated 2,500 in the wild (Associated Press, June 13).
