More than 20 states have seen ballot measures or legislative initiatives in the past two years that attempt to require labeling of foods that contain genetically modified ingredients. But while advocates have brought new attention to the issue, the proposals have seen only limited success. Another avenue would be for the Food and Drug Administration to issue regulations requiring companies to label foods if ingredients are made with genetically modified organisms. So far, the agency has not agreed to such a plan and requires only that the foods meet the same safety requirements as those grown using traditional methods.
