Oil spills and pollutant discharges are ruining waters in the Niger Delta as local unrest, sabotage and disagreements over royalty payments slow the response to contamination that has built up over the years in one of Africa's most populous and oil-rich regions. Roughly 240,000 barrels of crude oil leak into the Niger Delta each year -- about the same amount of crude that spilled from the Exxon Valdez tanker in Alaska in 1989. Heavy metals cadmium, lead, chromium and nickel have been found in the water at levels exceeding U.S. EPA's maximum contaminant levels, and concentrations of the carcinogen benzene have been found to exceed World Health Organization recommendations.
