This issue of Ground Improvement is the final issue of the first volume of the journal to be published as part of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers. You may have noticed that the volume number for the journal in 2008 is 161 (in 2007 it was 11). This is because the numbering of volumes of the journal now corresponds with the other journals of the Proceedings package. The change in the numbering and status of this journal coincides with significant changes that have been taking place in the learned society activities of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
