摘要

Treatment technologies that rely on physical mechanisms to remove or stabilize environmental contaminants were once the remedies of choice for contaminated groundwater. This included options such as groundwater extraction and above ground treatment systems, aquifer sparging and venting, and deep soil mixing to encapsulate and bind up source mass within the saturated zone. As time passed, many of these techniques fell out of favor because they were found to be costly, inefficient, and often incapable of achieving a remedial end point in a timely manner owing to self-limiting rates of treatment. As a result, the remediation pendulum swung toward in situ biological and chemical treatment techniques that could seemingly promote more efficient destruction or transformation of contaminant mass to harmless end products.
