摘要

Although the Great Lakes are the largest freshwater system on Earth, the basin has the potential for local shortages, according to a new basinwide water availability assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey. Although groundwater pumping has had relatively little effect on water in the basin as a whole, pumping in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas has caused local groundwater levels to decline by as much as 1000 feet. Federal Study Maps Concentrations of Arsenic and Uranium The U.S. Geological Survey released a study which indicates that levels of naturally occurring arsenic and uranium exceed drinking water standards in some private drinking water wells in central and northeastern Massachusetts. State officials are working with USGS to develop resources that will help private well users determine whether their water meets federal safety standards, and provide guidance on water testing and treatment if it does not. Read the full USGS release at room/article.asp?ID=2730.
