摘要

In 2008, radionuclides were responsible for the third highest number of violations, in comparison with all other contaminants regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Table 1 shows that radionuclides ranked behind total coliform and arsenic and just ahead of nitrates in the number of violations for ground water supply systems in 2008. For reference, violations from ground water supply systems constituted 95% of all radionuclides violations for all public water systems.rnSources and Health Effects of RadionuclidesrnAs shown in Table 2, the primary sources of radionuclides in ground water are the erosion and decay of natural deposits containing radioactive minerals. Consumption of these minerals potentially causes increased risk of cancer. As a reminder, maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) are set based on consideration of potential health effects and our ability to measure and treat the contaminants.
