There is a large movement afoot to not accept monitored natural attenuation without an accompanying source area treatment. On paper, this looks like a reasonable request. If the transfer rate of hydrocarbons from the source to the dissolved plume is larger than the natural rate of degradation of those compounds in the dissolved plume, then the plume of hydrocarbons expands. If the transfer rate is equal to the rate of degradation, then the plume should not shrink or expand. Finally, if the transfer rate is less than the rate of degradation, the plume will shrink. If the objective is to clean the site, then the only way to do this is to remove enough mass in the source area so that natural degradation processes are always faster than the rate at which compounds transfer to the groundwater. Under these conditions, the dissolved plume will shrink and eventually disappear.
