Since the EPA issued the Ground Water Rule (GWR) on November 8, 2006, the Agency has prepared guidance to assist water systems and states in implementing the regulation. The rule's objective addresses greater protection from microbial pathogens in ground water-supplied public water systems. Of greatest concern to EPA are ground water systems that may be providing water containing disease-causing pathogens if fecal contamination is observed in their supplies. Although the GWR applies to ground water-supplied public water systems, any system that combines untreated ground water with surface water delivered to its customers must also comply with its requirements.
