Our editorials this year have focused on the theme of papers and peer review. First, Francis Chapelle wrote on the "History and Practice of Peer Review" in which he pointed out, among others, that conducting a review is time consuming and difficult. Next, Randy Hunt and Frank Schwartz wrote a guest editorial under the title "For Whom Do We Write? Suggestions for Getting Read in the 21st Century." They stressed the need for brevity in writing in order to be read. Finally, in my editorial "Groundwater Grows" I reported on the dramatic growth in manuscript submissions to Groundwater. In combination, these three editorials point to a troubling development-readers and reviewers are drowning in papers.
