Los Angeles County has been augmenting its ground water supplies through managed aquifer recharge (MAR) since the 1930s, and introduced recycled municipal waste water as a recharge source in 1962. The first recycled water reuse project was the Whittier Narrows Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) that uses effluent for surface spreading in the Montebello Forebay Spreading Grounds (MFSG) located in the Central Ground Water Basin.
