During the past 5 years, there have been lively and thoughtful discussions within the community of hydro-geologic researchers in North America about the future of the discipline (Belitz 2001; Schwartz and Ibaraki 2001; Miller and Gray 2002; Phillips 2002; Schwartz et al. 2002; Voss 2005). These discussions have focused in large part on the question of whether, as Schwartz and Ibaraki (2001) have contended following journal citation analyses, "ground water research is ... mature and close to aging ... and the number of truly impactful problems ... have dwindled to just a few" (492). The idea that hydro-geology has reached this state as a discipline appears to be recent, but stocktaking of hydrogeology's past and future is not new. O.E. Meinzer, arguably the most influential American hydrogeologist during the first half of the 20th century, engaged in such stocktaking. In this note, I review Meinzer's comments, and I point to hydro-geologic issues that have emerged and those that have persisted since his time.
