Those seeking to attain a cost-effective and flexible regulatory tool for predicting metal toxic-ity in water need to know about the BLM - the Biotic Ligand Model. Over the past decade, the BLM has gained respect as a powerful quantitative tool to model and predict the bioavailability of potentially harmful metals to aquatic organisms. The BLM was conceived when regulators and scientists collaborated to apply the results of metal speciation (i.e. chemical form of metal) and bioavailability research to the development of water quality criteria (WQC). Conceptually, the BLM treats experimentally-determined sites of toxic action in aquatic organisms (e.g. fish gills) as biotic ligands that can interact with metals and other cations in water.
