Public-Private Partnerships (or "P3s") have become an "essential element in the burgeoning business of brownfields redevelopment in Canada. Broadly defined as strategic alliances and cooperative ventures between the public and private sectors, P3s are proving to be an efficient and effective means of expanding brownfields redevelopment and lowering regulatory barriers. As Canada works toward the remediation and redevelopment of approximately 30,000 brownfield sites nation-wide, advancing P3 programs and opportunities will become increasingly important. An example of this current of cooperation ran strongly in the recent remediation of the former maintenance yard in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
