When polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were first synthesized in 1881, the relatively fire-resistant and stable compounds were desirable components in a wide range of industrial and consumer products. By the 1930s manufacturers were aware that PCBs caused serious health problems in their workers, and doctors advised them that other effects could be occurring as well. But this did not stop industries from continuing to produce and use PCBs, or from releasing PCBs into the environment. Today PCB-contaminated soils pose an enormous environmental problem. These toxic chemicals, which didn't cease being produced until the 1970s, still exist in several industrial sites, including manufacturing, electric generation and military facilities. They continue to enter the environment through the improper disposal of PCB-containing materials and accidental incidents, such as fires. The health impacts can be brutal, as PCBs bio-accumulate in the body and may cause a range of adverse health effects, including cancer, immune suppression, and reproductive damage.
