摘要

Since the 1980s, most provinces and territories have been providing an Air Quality Index (AQI) for specific locations. The goal of the AQI is to provide Canadians with information on the adverse effects of the five common pollutants: sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and total suspended particulates. Recently, most provinces have also added information about fine particulate matter (PM_(2.5)). To determine the index, the concentrations of individual pollutants are converted to a common scale. The scale, which ranges from zero to 100, is designed so that a value of zero corresponds to zero concentration. A value of 100 represents the maximum tolerable. Using this scale for each pollutant, the air quality can then be described verbally according to the following description.
