Harrison Hot Springs Resort in British Columbia has a 50-acre, multi-million gallon water system with a guaranteed free source of power - the earth itself. The resort has harnessed the natural hot springs that already feed the hotel's pools and spas to help heat water for the guest rooms, saving gas and reducing air pollution. Combining a commitment to environmental sustainability with the purchase of a $23,000 heat exchanger, the resort has tapped into the earth's limitless energy, estimates they'll eventually save $33,000 in natural gas costs annually, and reduce air emissions from the boiler system by about 300 tonnes while generating 48,000 gallons of water daily during all but the coldest months. Harrison Hot Springs' applications of sustainable and economical systems are instructive for other resorts across North America.
