At sunset on 14 November 1974, before a crowd of distinguished visitors and thousands of Manus Islanders, the Australian White Ensign was lowered for the last time at HMAS Tarangau. The base, which the RAN had taken over in 1949, was recommissioned as the Papua New Guinea Defence Force Patrol Boat Base Lombrum.
