A centralised room thermostat is used usually to control conventional heating systems, switching the boiler on and off in response to the temperature demand by that single thermostat. The temperature of other rooms could be controlled by thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs). These provide an upper limit by shutting off the flow of water to the radiator, but they will not turn the boiler on or off. When the centralised room thermostat is satisfied, the whole system will be switched off, so there is no means of providing heat to other rooms. If the centralised room thermostat and the room it serves are at the correct temperature, other rooms may still be left too cold. This usually leads to the thermostat being set too high, leaving TRVs to limit the temperature in each room.
