Critical listening is an essential audiophile skill. It's what we do when we compare components, adjust the position of loudspeakers, or tweak our listening rooms for better acoustics. Such efforts can be arduous for beginners but become second nature for veterans. Many of us can 'dial in' a system in short order. It's also what mastering engineers do in a more meticulous manner - taking a raw recording and making it sound as engaging as possible. They do this through careful listening and comparison, sometimes making adjustments as small as 0.25dB, a level of skill that comes only with long experience.
