September 2010 marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. One aspect of that victory that often receives little attention yet played a major role in the successes of the Royal Air Force fighter squadrons against the bombers of the Luftwaffe is the part played by Range and Detection Finding (RDF), a deliberate acronym confusion with Radio Direction Finding since the true nature of the equipment was Radio Direction and Ranging (RADAR).
