A typical distributed ATM campus network―BUPT (Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications) ATM Campus Network is presented in this paper. This network is composed of several small ATM switches in a distributed manner and will be connected to the China Education and Research Network (CERNET). First, an architecture of BUPT ATM Campus Network is introduced. Then the interworking and protocol conversion between ATM network and existing 802. X LAN are discussed. Finally, some of the typical broadband applications such as multimedia communications, virtual workgroups, remote video-teaching and LAN emulation are described.
