Storage and transplantation of umbilical cord blood require a rapid, precise, and standard- ized method of counting hematopoietic progrenitor cells. We have evaluated the new ProCOUNT method for estimating the number of CD34~+ stem and progenitor cells in umbilical cord blood and compared it with the conventional colony forming unit-granulocyte macrophage (CFU-GM) assay. Forty-two unseparated samples of umbilical cord blood were analyzed with the ProCOUNT method.
