This book is the product of an enormous amount of hard work, and for that reason alone it should be praised. This review will reflect on the intellectual framework of the book and consider whether this effort was potentially misplaced. To begin with the most basic point: Cummings needs to work on the clarity of her writing. Grammatical and syntactical errors abound on every page, beginning with page 1. I am aware that copy-editing is a declining art, and it is a luxury that Oxbow does not bestow on its authors. Given this, the blame has to fall back on the author for the failure to correct simple mistakes. It is evident that the manuscript was hurried, but a basic computer-based grammatical check would not have been amiss here.
