Have sustainable practices taken a hit amid the pandemic? It would seem so, with disposable plasticware, PPE and other single-use items seeing increased use in an effort to maintain hygiene. Initiating or continuing sustainability efforts now might seem counterintuitive or costly, but hotels where this remains a priority say it makes good business sense. Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas still intends to eliminate plastic in all of its hotels and resorts by 2022, says Jeffery Smith, the Bangkok, Thailand-based company's vice president for sustainability. The IHG-owned luxury chain eliminated plastic bottles in 2003, got rid of straws in 2016 and set the no-plastic goal in 2018. "The first thing we did was take an inventory of everything that was plastic, and we thought that would be our baseline," Smith says. "But the second time we did our inventory, the number actually increased because we became more aware... The first time we did it, we didn't notice the laptop or the telephone, and it was an aha moment. It really is everywhere."
