One area in which mobile could revolutionize the hotel industry over the long term is the check-in and checkout process. A few hotels already are experimenting with technology that lets guests bypass the front desk, using smartphones as room keys. Choice Hotels Scandinavia partnered with locking vendor VingCard Elsafe late last year on the world's first pilot of a near-field communication (NFC)-enabled mobile phone check-in system, at Clarion Hotel Stockholm.
