摘要

Expedia's recent tie-up with Groupon, the flash sales website, serves as another signal that the hotel business is quickly moving toward further commoditization. "Groupon Getaways with Expedia offers consumers deeply discounted travel deals from among the more than 135,000 hotels worldwide that work with Expedia," the release says. Starting in the United States and Canada, with plans to expand to other countries, Expedia and Groupon also plan to include package deals, airline tickets, car rentals, cruises and destina- tion activities. The flash sales site operators contend these offers induce last-minute demand among consumers who would not have otherwise made the bookings. Hoteliers who reject flash sales opportunities tend to think these deals only induce cheaper demand - not incremental sales.
