Is the hotel industry doing enough to ensure the safety of its housekeeping staff? Despite the two high-profile incidents in New York City in May with former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Egyptian businessman Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar, sexual assault cases involving guests and housekeeping staff remain rare — something hotelkeepers, industry analysts and even unions agree on, although sexual harassment is more common, according to a recent Newsweek/Daily Beast poll.Consequently, most hotel chains are not implementing overhauls of staff safety policy, such as issuing panic buttons to housekeepers like The Pierre did immediately after the alleged sexual assault with Omar took place.None of the 10 largest hotel companies have made similar plans, and are instead reviewing staff training instead of making new technology purchases, according to public statements. Some hotel chains are not publicly responding to the issue at all.
