As Japan struggles to recover from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit the nation March 11, one thing the hotel industry can look to with pride is the way it responded to the crisis. Mark Kobayashi, director of public relations at The Peninsula Tokyo, reports nearly 800 people took shelter in the hotel's lobby and banquet rooms immediately following the quake, while many suites were opened for women with children and expectant mothers. "Many of the hotel's staff did not sleep that night," Kobayashi says. "Staff who were not scheduled to work even walked or rode their bicycles to the hotel to assist."
