The Six Sens es-managed Soneva Fushi resort in the Maldives has opened what is thought to be the world's first resort-based astronomical observatory. Set within the resort's lush jungle, the observatory allows guests to observe the heavens with its advanced-optics telescope, which employs the same technology as the famous Hubble Space Telescope. The observatory, which cost US$140,000 to build, features an automated dome with 360-degree views of the night sky, plus a comprehensive reference library and lecture space. The telescope's computer database contains information on a few million stars and can align itself via global positioning system.
