We want the guest to be as comfortable as possible. So whatever they want we will provide. Our job is to provide that as efficiently as possible." This simple statement from Hyatt Hotel Corp.'s director of energy programs, Brian Burke, sums up the company's energy initiatives. "There's nothing magic here," Burke says. "A lot of it is maintenance—making sure we are maintaining equipment at its peak efficiency. And when it's time to replace it, replacing it with the most efficient equipment available." Seems simple, right? But how do things change for 2006, when hoteliers could see some of the highest energy costs ever? "It doesn't matter about gas costs," Burke says. "Our strategy really doesn't change. It always makes sense to operate a central plant as efficiently as possible." Beyond that, using common sense and training employees about energy conservation may have the biggest impact. "If a light is left on that's not needed, we're wasting money and energy," Burke says. "It needs to be shut off."
