Global positioning systems have come a long way in the last ten years. Once relatively cumbersome and accurate only after careful calibration and long reading times, these now compact satellite receivers can now work in real time to at least centimetre accuracy, sometimes better. It is enough to make the old engineer grumble, good humouredly at least. "In my day" said one Jordanian on a big Middle East highway project recently, "we would have to set everything out by measuring angles carefully from two positions for an intersection point. And we would calculate those first - maybe 600 angles in a day for a section of road, curbs, corners and the like.
