Athens With the Olympics just two months away, Athens hoteliers are not only readying for the enormous influx of visitors, but also are anxiously awaiting the "free" publicity the Games will provide to millions of potential visitors. In anticipation of the events, Athens has embarked on a renaissance of its own, with the mission of completely transforming itself from a rundown, secondary European capital to compete on a global scale with the likes of Paris, Barcelona and Rome. However, changing perception is no small undertaking and for Athens' revamp story to be successful, much work needs to be done by the travel and tourism community, including a cooperative marketing effort between the government and private sector to susiain the tourism boom beyond August. The task for hoteliers to help Athens become a world-class destination is an overhaul of training and service standards.
