Caracas The hospitality industry continues to take serious body blows in Venezuela. There seems to be no end in sight to the political unrest that was ignited by a two-month national strike, which started in December and failed to oust President Hugo Chavez or garner early elections. The strike shut down most of the country, including its lucrative oil businesses that make Venezuela the world's fifth largest producer of oil. Furthermore, ongoing protests, sporadic violence and a handful of as-yet-unexplained bombings have sparked nationwide fears that have all but paralyzed daily life for Venezuelans. In Caracas hotel occupancies are below 20%, after an average of 64% before the strike. In the rural areas, that percentage is even lower. "There's no reason to be operating in Caracas right now," says Scott Berman, partner, PricewaterhouseCoop-ers, Miami. "Venezuela has a history of tension and political unrest, but I haven't seen it at this stage before. Occupancies are deplorable. Everyone there is holding their breath."
