Worldwide To survive in a slow economy, much attention has been given lately to the importance of brand affiliation. The belief is that hotels need that brand strength―from their buying power to their loyalty programs―to stay competitive. However, not all hotels fit into the often cookie-cutter approach of branded hotel operations. These are the independents, which tout their individuality, personalized service and design as the selling points not offered by many of the biggest chains. Yet while these hotels want to remain independent, the savviest among them are realizing in increasing number the benefits of aligning with a group. Be it an affiliation with a brand such as Starwood, which is embarking on its own type of consortia with its Luxury Collection, or a less formal local-level alliance, independents are joining forces to help level the playing field in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
