In every American dream story there are defining moments that shape one's destiny. For John Q. Hammons, HOTELS' 2003 Corporate Hotelier of the World, the story is no different. "I bet you've heard the rabbit story," says Hammons in a way that clearly implies it's not only a story he's told again and again, but also one that people remember. To hear Hammons tell it, the "rabbit story" was just a question of logic and survival for this depression-era child from a small Missouri town. The story goes something like this: To earn a little money (US$.05 per pelt), 12-year-old Quentin―as he was called as a boy―built a series of rabbit traps out of old wood. Every morning at 6 a.m. Quentin would check the traps and was averaging about six catches a day. That is until one day when he went out to the traps at his usual time and found the traps completely empty. This continued until he learned that an older boy, a "bully" type from the area, was stealing his rabbits by getting to the traps at 5 a.m. Hammon's solution? Get up at 4 a.m. Problem solved.
